Acupuncture Treatment in Mississauga

Acupuncture (from Latin, 'acus' (needle) + 'punctura' (to puncture)) is a form of alternative medicine and a key component of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) involving inserting thin needles into the body at acupuncture points.

Acupuncture, or needle puncture, is a European term invented by Willem Ten Rhyne, a Dutch physician who visited Nagasaki in Japan in the early part of the seventeenth century. The Chinese describe acupuncture by the character 'Chen', which literally means 'to prick with a needle', a graphic description of this therapeutic technique.

Acupuncture is an age old form of treatment with it’s roots in Southeast Asia and China. With the growing acceptance of acupuncture in western countries, modern clinical studies are beginning to shed light on the physiological effects that acupuncture has on the body. Considerable evidence had found that acupuncture initiates the release of the body’s natural pain control chemicals, opioid peptides, which create an analgesic effect.

For Acupuncture to be effective, four things should be considered before the acupuncturist begins treatment:
1. Determine how to best utilize needles in the area being treated.
2. How to precisely target acupoints that supply the area being treated by the spinal cord.
3. In-depth knowledge of classical Chinese acupuncture points involving major nerves and blood vessels is required, as these areas have a direct or reflex benefit for the condition being treated.
4. Understand how the needles directly affect muscles, joints, ligaments or other tissue involved in the afflicted area.
